In 1965, Bruce’s photographs of poverty were exhibited with photographs by Dorothea Lange and other famous photographers at the Smithsonian Institution in a major showing called Profile of Poverty. His Suzy photo has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and museums all over the world. It first was published as part of Bruce’s photo story in Look magazine.
The historical photographs offered below appear in Bruce Roberts' book Just Yesterday: North Carolina People and Places. They portray the wonderful people living and working in North Carolina during the 1950s and '60s.
Some of the photographs are offered as a silver print, as well as the standard digital print. For a silver print, Bruce personally handprints each image on Ilford silver process photographic paper. Light is shone on the original negative, which is projected onto the special silver paper by an "enlarger." When exposed to light and placed in a tray of "developer" solution, the silver in the paper forms the stunning image much richer than inks can print. Each silver print continues through multiple fresh-water baths and a drying phase to create a museum-quality image. His signature can be found on the lower back of each print.
Other black-and-white photographs listed here are from his original negatives and are digitally recreated. All prints are 11x14 and come mounted on an acid-free board ready for framing.
If you are interested in acquiring other photographs as silver prints, Bruce works in a darkroom occasionally and can take special orders. Please contact him personally through the website for further information.
Finally, if you would like a digital print in a larger size than offered here, please contact Bruce for special pricing. Just use the "Contact Us" button on the top of each page.
